Cycling in and around Birmingham England
I will admit until this year I was sniffy about Audaxing, always thought Sportives were better and more suited to me. Then this year I did London-Wales-London audxaed and just loved every minute and adjusted my aims. I had already booked a number of sportives anyway but from now on it will be Audaxing (bar one or two sportives I like).
So I have two more lined up, Beacon Road's Kidderminster Killer and then one up in Chester but now I will be doing this self supported one at the beginning of August.
I guess I have found the heart of cycling .... now who can make it cheaper to maintain a bike ha ha
I've done the Kidderminster Killer myself. A lovely day out if you don't mind a bit of pain and searing exhaustion. Great part of the country to ride through, regardless of the state of your body, and some lovely climbs to challenge every fibre of your leg muscles in ways that you never realised was possible. Would highly recommend it to anyone fit enough.
Welcome to the 'family' and even more TLAs ... BCM, PBP, LEL ... ;-)
Welcome to the dark side.
Years ago I too made that transition. I recall those heady days of the sportive pioneer events such as the Autumn Epic, Spid Riley, Border Raid and Fred Whitton. At that time, all were organised by clubs or individuals wishing to promote cycling. In general, they were well organised, friendly and worth every penny. Alas no more, many have either been bought out by large scale entities or been squeezed out of the market by organisations with large advertising budgets. The quality soon started to deteriorate although a few still hold strong.
So I transitioned to audaxing and now organise three events for the Beacon along with one 'perm'. Other events worth considering are those organised by John Hamilton from Upton Magna near Shrewsbury, Roy Bishop from Lichfield or one of the many events provided by Mark Rigby in Tewkesbury.
The ones I will keep Phil are the early season ones, for example done one from Garden every year and the CFC one from Stratford as both go to charities ... I tick off the Velothon this year, doing revolve 24 so apart from the fred most done and may even try Fred on my own but understand water could be a problem ?
Oh I am a member of Audax UK now and whilst now card for LEL will start with yours Phil properly ..
go on Andy BCM ?
ah yeah I saw that one and planning a 600km next year so that is one I am looking at
