Cycling in and around Birmingham England
We have the referendum first so the candidates have to be a little circumspect because they can only be candidates if the Birmingham public decide to have a mayor. So in that respect, it is quite early in the electoral cycle.
Presumably we will have a Green candidate in due course who should be expected to support cycling?
There are a few councillors said to be interested in being major. But the two leading candidates for Birmingham Mayor are said to be Sion Simon, a former Junior minister, and Gisela Stuart, MP for Edgbaston who is standing down at the next election.
I questioned them both on Twitter and here are the responses I got. Gisela Stuart replied almost instantly but kept her cards close to her chest:
certainly wouldn't do anything as stupid as lamposts and traffic lights bang in middle of cyclepath - see new road by QE. source
A second reply:
I get complaints about cycling on pavements. do you? source
Sion Simon relied a little later, but with this response:
I support @thetimes Cities fit for cycling campaign and their eight point manifesto http://thetim.es/cyclesafety #cyclesafe @kingsheath @brumcyclist source
Make of it what you will.
