Cycling in and around Birmingham England

I don't want to get into a debate about the riskiness of cycling over tramlines but can somebody advise what the layout will be when the trams head up to Five Ways?

I'm sure I remember reading that cars won't be allowed down Broad Street so I presume it will be one tram lane and one bus lane. Can anybody confirm?

Collecting evidence from the website, current road layout, and the original set up of the bicycle banning on the extension between Snowhill and New Street, its very safe to assume cycling will be banned on both Hill Street and also on Broad Street I am sorry to say. They already made bike bans on Corp Street for cyclists because of the trams.

Birmingham Connected seemed very happy and pleased they banned cyclists on Twitter few months ago. What have they done in the past several years for cyclists? NOTHING!

As to weather cars will be allowed or not I am not sure. I would assume cars will STILL remain as being banned on that section of Broad Street. I would not see why they would reopen it to motor traffic. It would be pretty stupid of the council if they did reopen to cars as they CLAIM they want to get the city to be a more car free area.

I've ridden the tram route from Stephenson Street to Colmore Row loads of times and will be cycling on Broad Street too. There might be a no cycling sign near the Apple Store but I've never seen it officer I'm very sorry. I'm not sure what the plans for Broad Street are.

1) Trams should be running in middle of road (as the old ones used to do) as far as possible on reserved track. If caught earlu enough at the design stage, a case might be made to install vignole section BR113A rail at points where other road traffic crosses, and install a cycle-proof level crossing system, which has practically eliminated cyclist falls on railway crossings - I gather such a crossing on the Wensleydale Railway is saving them c.£10,000/year in insurance excesses for cyclists' claims, and since it was installed 4 years ago they've had just one cyclist fall off, and were not found to be at fault.

2) A robust study of cyclist falls in Toronto, with the TTC's very dense network of tram lines estimated that 85% of cyclists' falls were delivered as a result of another road user causing the cyclist to modify their intended course for crossing the rails or be distracting them at critical moment. Most Dutch riding bikes around tram tracks with no cars or buses to watch for.      

It appears that there is little gap between the rail and the cobbles in the Stockton film; also the tyres were probably wider than many are today.

Baring in mind these are all shared with motor vehicles. As far as I am aware only permitted motor vehicles are allowed up Navigation street. Apart from that, there is nothing that would run you over if you fell/slipped on the tram tracks. BUT its not difficult to ride a long tram tracks. I did it BEFORE they put in the bicycle bans. When you cross your wheels over the tracks, (Do NOT go fast, AND be sure you give a wide angle move. Bassically you need to lean left then lean right to get a more appropriate angel crossing over the tracks. But this information is pointless as cycling along the road is now banned.

Something the Council could have EASILY done was install a central bicycle lane in the middle of the tram line. So cyclists would cycle in the middle. All would of needed was to move the tram tracks over to the side a little more.
