Cycling in and around Birmingham England
The Brompton hire automated unit is about to go live and the BBC has just featured it. Not a simple measure as all sorts of issues come up when it goes in at a railway station. However the film features what might be termed the '-lite' with a small fleet of bikes leased by the Daily Telegraph - in livery - darting around London. The -lite version has been operating since April 2009 (predating the Boris-bikes) from the LPO at Waterloo, and has the potential to offer a low cost way to try out the concept, using much the same system as the automated dock but within the security of say an office reception or security counter and using a space roughly the size of a cleaners cupboard or toilet cubicle to 'park' 9-12 bikes (and probably support a fleet of 20-30 if the users keep the bikes by desks and at home.
Brompton Dock is a separate operation to deliver the hire/lease scheme and if you know of a likely user they can register interest with www.bromptondock.co.uk.
