Cycling in and around Birmingham England
Hi folks...
After the bike jumble yesterday, hopped onto the cut at Spaghetti, into the centre and out to Kingswood via Tyseley, Solihull. Came back to Kings Norton on the Stratford Canal. Route here:
I just have to say - the Stratford canal has the worst towpath I've ever ridden in my life. It took 2 hours to cycle 12 miles - mud in places 6 inches deep. Shame, because it's a lovely waterway. It's better at the city end but down around Illshaw Heath, it's murder. Only attempt it if you're on a bike with fat tyres. I nearly took out the road bike yesterday, I'm so glad I didn't.
Lovely routes though, and I liked the section around Knowle.
All the best

A good ride from Erdington is to take the Tame Valley canal from Spaghetti and follow it to its' end around Tipton.
You can then link up with the Main Line canal back into Brum to Brindleyplace.
About 15 miles to there, then another 5 back to Erdington by road.

Yeah, the last bit was rather chewy.
I like the Tame Valley Canal. I often do a circular route from Brownhills, down the Daw End branch - Trent Valley - back through Walsall, about 27 miles total. Footpaths rough between Aldridge and Park Hall, though.
If I go into the centre, I like to come out either on the canal at the rear of Star City, or the one that forms route 535 - both terminate on the mainline at Spaghetti Junction. Some of the bridges around Great Barr are beautiful and stunning.
Thinking about exploring down to Stourbridge next.
All the best

I got as far as the Black Boy pub in Knowle and then I went home on the road. I've got 2.125 inch knobblies on my bike and I was still getting bogged down.
