Birmingham Cyclist

Cycling in and around Birmingham England

I'm not sure that this counts as a cycle any more, but it started out life as a Carrera bike, and I did find it outside Birmingham Central Library.   So I guess it fits in with the ethos of Birmingham Cyclist.   You may notice that the owner has made a number of subtle changes to the original bike in order to provide power assistance.

The petrol tank is held on in a novel orientation, partly with a couple of  lightweight clips with an attractive oxidised finish, but mainly with generous quantities of insulating tape, which keeps the added weight down.   In order to prevent the fuel freezing in Birmingham's harsh winters, the plastic fuel pipe is cunningly supported by the hottest part of the engine.   The engine is attached to the frame with further clamps and more insulating tape.   An eco-friendly pair of recycled underpants provides vibration isolation.   Ancillary equipment (nice to see the inclusion of  a silencer) is also held on with insulating tape.

A motorcycle chain has been fitted to transfer drive from the engine to a large sprocket that has been attached to the back wheel.   This necessitated removing the back brake, but presumably that was felt to be unnecessary.   It looks like the chain went via a jockey wheel that has been attached to the chain stay with a precision engineered metal clamp, but alas the chain was resting on the ground, broken in two.

This is actually a safety feature, as it meant the bike was brought to a halt before the seat stay bearing reached the end of its natural lifespan:

You can see everything has been expertly maintained, and the owner has shown themselves to be a responsible individual by leaving this highly desirable vehicle locked to a stand rather than just lying about wherever the chain broke.   It was certainly attracting lots of attention and admiring smiles.

This clever enhancement of a Carrera bike is a splendid demonstration of Birmingham being the city of a thousand trades.

..... *speechless*

I'd swear I saw that on Critical Mass a few years ago, but it seems unlikely to have lasted that long.  Maybe it's been carefully mothballed to avoid the police?

It’s currently advertised for sake on Facebook for £200

I’m quite tempted

£200 for a "bike" with a half sawn-through frame (amongst numerous other serious problems)?   You're kidding, surely?
