Birmingham Cyclist

Cycling in and around Birmingham England

Can anyone help me here?

My wife has a 1960's Mercian which she loves to bits.  However it is becoming increasingly difficult  to source quality replacement parts.  The main difficulty is the narrow rear triangle which limits the choice of hubs to old fashioned 5/6 speed freewheels with a consequent lack of sprocket range.

I would like to install a more modern wheelset with an 8/9 speed freehub/cassette (and brifters) but I need to get the frame sorted.

Does anyone know where I can get a steel frame cold set near to Birmingham?

Why not get it back to Mercian - hardly any great distance to get to Derby!

RJ the bike guy...

Yeah, just looked at the Mercian  prices.  £40 to retrack the frame & forks which is probably the cold setting price.  I might as well get the brakes drilled for AK while i'm at it. But its only £120 for a respray. Then there's transfers. I suppose I should get some chroming done too, to keep it looking nice, and a new headset too. Oh what the hell £450-ish should cover it...

... but then there's the new wheels and groupset ...  another £400 ?   eek  I need my pension lump sum to make this happen ;-)

The Bike Foundry in Stirchley are probably worth askin. Or if you fancied doing it yourself, Sheldon Brown's site is a good resource http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

Thanks for all the responses.

I think, on the whole, I'm going to take it back to Mercian for a 'proper job'.

I've still got her old Colin Cape race frame in the shed though. I might have a go at that one on my own - using the screw-out method.

Keep it concours.

One Eroica ready concours bike is enough James. The rest of my stable needs to move on.  :-)

Did mine myself at home......never had a problem in 1000s of miles after.

But for a local professional option, try Lev at Cyclechain (only frame builder in Birmingham....allegedly)

Btw Mercian took 6 months to do a proper job and the results are great :-)

Fin is in France long term
