Good news, Edgbaston tunnel towpath is about to be widened. Bad news, it will be closed for 10 weeks from 2nd January to 16th March 2018.

* Update: Closure due to start from 22nd January

Fantastic news!

Agreed, not so much whilst the work is going on, but certainly when it's finished - looking forward to not having to get off to walk through or deal with impatient cyclists/walkers who don't wait at the other end like everyone else etc etc.

Wonder what "towpath diversion will be in place" means for cycling. Might pop into the office at Cambrian Wharf and ask when they're likely to know.

Thats good news, if they could also widen the towpath that's between Bournville and the Bristol Rd that would be amazing!

Really pleased that this is happening and that we have a start and completion date. Look forward to using it.

Top news, thought this was years away if ever :-)
Anyone know by how much are they widening the path?

Hopefully very good news.

But who is going to organise the sweepstake on how long the opening will be delayed?

It was a few months ago I spoke to CRT about the plans but they were looking for solutions that would allow better flow of traffic on the towpath. At the moment the tunnel can take two barges passing side my side but they were well aware that barges wait until the other exits the tunnel, so the implication was the extended towpath would take up a fair chunk of that unused space.  I'll pop into the office tomorrow as it's next to work and see if they know more.

So cynical Doug.  My money's on September.

I don't know but narrowboats are around 2 metres wide so it should be possible to add that much to the width of the towpath if only one boat will be going through at a time.

Let’s be honest it’s likely to suffer the same problems as the University Station steps installation.
