Cycling in and around Birmingham England
There's been some talk about cycle path construction on this forum lately. By chance, David Hembrow has just published a blog post on the best way to build a cycle path. You'll note it doesn't involve asphalt, tar, or chippings, but it does create a surface that is both grippy and low rolling resistance. I've ridden these paths, including some of those in the blog post. One path switched from smooth asphalt to concrete at one point, and the reduction in effort required to pedal was noticeable.
This can't be what they're doing on the A38, can it?
AFAIK it will be asphalt, but that will be good enough, provided they don't wreck it with spray and chip.
I have no idea what they plan to do about winter servicing, but at least the cycleway will be wide enough to allow it to be done.
when I rode in and around Ghent in April and rode on those concrete surfaces the difference was noticeable and great
