Cycling in and around Birmingham England
I passed this chap this morning at approximately 0730 as I rode under the bridge at Small Heath. He was walking fairly slowly whilst holding a large torch behind his back that was switched on and running in flash mode. I thought it was odd at the time but, as there are a few strange characters on that stretch of canal, I thought nothing more of it. I've mentioned this to a colleague at work, who uses the same route, and he told me that he saw the same guy thrust the torch in to the face of a passing cyclist about 2 minutes after I snapped this photo. The only reason he could see for this was that they had their front light in flash mode as a cyclist who followed directly behind them, without lights on, was not 'punished'.
First time I've seen him and I don't know if it is an isolated, one-off attack, but I just thought I'd let people know to be on their guard in case we now have a self-appointed vigilante in that area who has an issue with cyclists, especially those with flashing lights!
That's a new one. Can't see it working though, as the sort of cyclists who think flashing front lights are a good idea appear to be immune to strobe-o-vision, or are at least sufficiently terrified of motor vehicles (even on the towpath?) that they consider it necessary anyway.
The concern of course is that he might escalate to something more violent...
To Kim's question "even on the towpath?", I would add "and on a bright, sunny day?".
It is hardly exemplary behaviuor but I do have a degree of sympathy for him
I'm supposing that if you were an oncoming cyclist with a strobe, this fellow might aim his at you as a countermeasure.
Was there a boat nearby? I would imagine that people who live onboard find flashing lights quite annoying.
