Cycling in and around Birmingham England

Hello cyclists of Birmingham

Just a safety post here for anyone who cycles Northbound along Hurst Street. I would strongly advise cyclists to KEEP LEFT of this barrier. It appears to be part (of the really rubbish) contraflow cycle lane.
On Monday morning witnessed this cyclist on the wrong side who nearly got hit by an oncoming car. The corner here is a blind corner so motorists can't see bikers coming up the middle of the road. I've also had some close calls pulling out here with cyclists behind me that cut across on the right instead of the left.
Please make sure to stay left. Its for safety reasons ONLY.

Thank You

Kind Regards
Alex (ARK Youtube)

Yes, the contraflow is a bit rubbish, but it's a handy way to get to the Town Hall area. I ride up here about 20 times a week and I always stay on the extreme right of that bit of road, so I have full visibility of cars coming around that dangerous corner. I'm sure the bit of road they want cyclists on there is a danger of dooring as well?

You are correct though. The absolute worst place to be on that bit of road is just to the right of that bollard

Agree.  The onl safe position there is too the far right

I've not noticed, but are there any signs that say btw cyclist contraflow?

There are on Hurst st but nothing to warn drivers coming round the corner that they might encounter a cyclist coming the othe way.

Exactly. I don't agree with being on the far right as cyclist going the other way stay left as well. BUT I agree in the fact your visable to oncoming traffic which is good. And like I stated in the comments its a rubbish cycle lane, so no ones fault for bad/poor riding style really. When its a rubbish cycle lane, not sure how you can follow the rules properly anyway. But ya just stay visable here.

Like Steve said.

There are signs to warn motorists of oncoming cyclists but there is NO signs before the corner where cyclists cross over the traffic flow. I'll see if I can get a snap shot from my camera to show.

A piece of contraflow that in principle is great but has an extremely dangerous junction is for cyclists coming down Hill Street and coming across cars turning right out of Hinckley Street who don't bother to look right at the junction as they aren't expecting/ aren't bothered about cyclists coming down the hill. I would definitely advise others to take it easy down that hill.
