OK - here's a teaser. Early gear system, providing four (four! Count 'em...) gears. How does it work?

Those who saw this on Twitter need not apply ;0). Note the rod control system for the front mechanism.

Best wishes

Oh clever stuff... two freewheels x 2 chainrings = 4 gears... except for the gears using the inner freewhel you have to pedal backwards! The inactive freewheel will be rotating backwards with the chain feeding it that little idler wheel.  Now that must feel really weird!  (Hope I'm right with this!)

Yes! Bang on. Clever, quite popular at the time. More common with only one chainring on the front.

Well sussed!

Best wishes

So how does the change between the two freewheel mechanisms take place? I can work out the front derailleur, but can't see any links or cables for the rear.
There's no change, the chain runs over both. Pedal forward one drives, the other freewheels, pedal reverse and the converse is true. Thoroughly bizarre, but very, very ingenious.

Best wishes

Any idea what brand the bike is?

I'm assuming that the backward pedalling gear is the lower ratio...?

This sort of reminds me of a bike I saw on a TV show once a long time ago (one of these where people compete by engaging in a series of weird activities). One was what they called the backwards bike and they had to see who could ride the furthest distance before falling off.

The bike had to be pedalled backwards but also when you steered left it would go right and vice versa ;-)

Andy.
