Get a courier (messenger) bag with a third strap. A decent one won't move around on your back. I can get a laptop and a week's worth of work clothes in mine.

I  was nearby so popped into TK Maxx in Castle Vale a few nights ago, no bike stands outside so I wheeled my bike in. Cycling back into town on the canal in the dark was interesting. They had 6 dark red Crumpler bags at £20 (rrp £60). Like this (or v similar)...
