Cycling in and around Birmingham England
In an idle moment ,i.e the rest of the family had gone to bed and I was allowed to use the laptop, I was browsing the various discussions on the forum. After I had finished I began to wonder why people cycle.
We have spent a lot of the last year complaining about; cars, motorists, pedestrians, cycle lanes, lack of cycle lanes, street furniture, the Council, other cyclists, rude people, the MAC ( that was just me!) road design, lack of road design, bike shops, the fact that the world is not revolving around the need of cyclists etc etc.
Let us make this year one of concentrating on the joy of cycling and start looking at the positive side.
We are not going to encourage new cyclists by focusing on how dangerous and unpleasant it is.
(It has just struck me that this posting is a contradiciton in terms because it is a complaint. Help! I am stuck in an Hegelian paradox)
Happy New Year

Permalink Reply by Robert on January 7, 2012 at 11:42 I would second that, but...
Inspired by some of Brownhill Bob's videos I've been toying with the idea of posting embedded videos of pleasant cycling, but my first attempt is languishing at the bottom of the ratings so I'll take that as a resounding raspberry. I guess if you're a cyclist you already know there are nice places to go for a ride; with a few edits I managed to sneak in four other cyclists enjoying a ride round Bournville in the sun. Do would-be cyclists visit this forum?
I also started a thread to encourage people to submit their quiet cycling links between areas of Birmingham (in the hope that BCC might pick up on it and spend a few quid on cycle route signs and create a budget cycling network), but you were the only person that replied.
Great resolution Rob. We need to emphasise the fun and passion of cycling more Zen than Hegel!

I do not feel a victim of circumstances, more someone who is lucky to be able still to enjoy cycling at the age of 53.I have felt like that since I was first able to ride a bike in 1963. At work several people have started to ride to work and I think it is good to encourage and support them. The more we stress the health benefits, the enjoyment, the freedom, the stress-busting aspects the more people will want to join us rather than see us as annoying eco-warriors.
Permalink Reply by Rob not Bob on January 7, 2012 at 14:56 maybe a rundown of why we cycle may remind us all of why we do it. Here are my reasons
1. It helps keep me fit
2 It is quicker for me to get to work than public transport
3. My bike dosn't have a top deck full of cannabis smokers
4. It saves me £15 a week in bus fares
5. I dont have to speak to anyone for the 45 minutes commute. A real joy after a day at work
6. I can go wheeeeee on steep hills :)
7. it is FUN

I wonder how Jed got on cycling to Kidderminster? - I hope we didnt put him off.

Permalink Reply by Basil W Bloke on January 7, 2012 at 17:26 Well said Rob.
However, after thinking about it for a while, I have managed to cut down considerably my list of reasons why I cycle.
1. I like riding my bike.
I have been thinking about why I like cycling a lot recently.
I think its because It makes me feel really really free
on a slightly different note after my cycle shop tirade in the summer, I have now found one I love using. They don't sponsor the site so ill just say they on Allison Street.
