Petition: build a Velodrome for the Commonwealth Games

Manchester and Glasgow both built Velodromes when they hosted the Commonwealth Games. Birmingham has decided not to do this and hold the track cycling events in London instead.

Would be great but simple fact is no cash for it as this is the cheap games and no way can it be funded.

There is the cash, but a decision has been made to spend it on, for example, an Olympic size swimming pool in a grotty part of Smethwick instead of a Velodrome. Choices, choices.

yes there is but what is of greater benefit to the community over time (agree with location of Smethwick, FFS should be close to NIA !!) and if cycling was preferred then swimming would be off to Sheffield or somewhere. Declare an interest, daughter does competitive swimming and we need so much a proper 50M pool with spectator facilities

Could the NIA be converted for a temporary facility?  Glasgow raised the ground level at Hampden Park for athletics.

Although I do think there's going to be something quite funny about a London stadium with Birmingham 2022 plastered all over it.

I'd love Brum Velodrome, but would it ever be a profitable place?

Question is to look at Derby, London is London and Manchester has the backing of the British team, the ones in Glasgow and Newport backed by govts.

However Derby is different, does anyone know the situation there.

As for temp features I guess the NIA is lined up for something else ? but I wonder could say the Hawthorns of St Andrews be converted ?

The problem in having a velodrome for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is the short amount of time available to build one.  The original bid was for Birmingham to have the Games in 2026.

Brian Cookson, OBE, former president of the UCI has suggested Birmingham should have a velodrome as a legacy following the Games similar to the UCI Velodrome in Aigel which is 200meters and is hosting the 2018 World Junior Track Championships.   Such a velodrome would need less funding than a 250m track.

The government have paid over £650m to Birmingham and it is said 90% venues already exist.

Manchester Velodrome is  used 10 hours a day seven days a week.
