Cycling in and around Birmingham England
I'm looking for an opinion from people who cycle along Queensbridge Road during the day.
Initially, is there anything in particular that afftects your trip along that section of road?

Permalink Reply by LS on June 23, 2011 at 23:02 I think it may have been on the cards at one time. 6 or 7 years ago I saw a council cycle map that had a cycle lane running past my house which is in a direct line from Queensbridge Road. I don't remember where else it went but I know the lane was never implemented and the map was changed.

Permalink Reply by David on June 25, 2011 at 9:35 Looking back over the replies so far, it looks like the main concerns with Queensbridge Road are about speed and parking. It would be nice if the effect of pavement parking was to slow traffic enough to make it safe for cycling. But I don't think it works that way....
I'm thinking that it would be easier to get people to park elsewhere than to get speed measures introduced. I'm curious about the amount of internal parking available at Uffculme, and will try to make enquiries with the facilities people about improving their information about and access to on-site parking. But I am also thinking of comments made elsewhere: that Yew Tree Lane is quiet and a safer place to park, and that the Chamberlain House car park sits unused since Social Services moved out. Perhaps Uffculme could simply direct people to use those options, and make greater use of the 'Pedestrian Access' gate. Perhaps a campaign to get double yellows along that route would help move things along. Pun intended.
As an aside, I cycled along there yesterday morning about 8:45, and watched both lanes come to a standstill. The southbound lane was backed up from the lights to the Yew Tree junction. The northbound lane was stalled by a bus that couldn't get past a car parked part way up the pavement just before the Yew Tree junction. The bus had to wait for southbound traffic to clear, so as to cross over the centreline and pass the parked car. (Whilst that did inded slow traffic enough to make for safer cycling, it wasn't ideal in terms of navigating passage, nor of reducing gridlock.)

I cycled past Chamberlain House the other week and the gates were open, there were two cars parked there and the whole of Queensbridge Road was its usual mess.
