Cycling in and around Birmingham England
Hi all.
For those of you whom have smart phones I'm sure that you are well aware of the GPS tracking functions. I have until now been using My Track by Google to record some of my rides. However, yesterday I came across another app called Sports Tracker, it appears to have much of the functionality but with a few extras thrown in. For example, if you go for a ride and take pictures it will show you exactly where you were at the time of taking it. It will even show you what song you were listening to at each stage of you ride so that you can see how your choice of music affects you pace.
Anyway, for those interested here's a link to their website (they have videos on here). It's completely free, has no adverts and is available on both Android and IOS.
Regards,
Lucas
Ps. Here's one of mine as an example.

Permalink Reply by Kim on February 3, 2012 at 0:28 I have a Garmin that's far better suited to the purpose than a smartphone, but FWIW I hear good things about Sports Tracker.
I used a Garmin for eight years on Audax and other rides.
I logged all my rides, saved them as Garmin .gdb files etc.
After five years, I gave up. Finding my way was more important than having a record of how many times I stopped for a wee.
PS BTW. There is a report on Garmin eTrex 30 in the latest Arrivee AUK magazine. Francis doesn't sound too impressed, and what I read, the autoroute plotting facility has not got any better than the previous model. It all seems to be 'pretty pictures'. The OS map is near illegible on the small screen.
I won't be buying one.
Permalink Reply by Toby on February 3, 2012 at 11:00 I use Cyclemeter for iPhone. Cost about £3.50 2 years ago. Will calculate splits and signal intervals. Here's my regular "from Clent" route I have saved on mine;
Permalink Reply by Rich22222 on February 3, 2012 at 12:21 I'm occasionally use Mapmyride+ on android, which is all very similar, apart from it doesn't have the music link, although it does show the elevation of the route and you can also share your live route and position on facebook/twitter (if you so wish!)
An example: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/54437242
(I think it may include the odd advert, but I may be wrong)
Permalink Reply by LS on February 3, 2012 at 12:39 I sometimes see cyclemeter tweets pop up where it says "Started ride with cyclemeter..... Cyclemeter will speak your replies to me". I'm always tempted to reply e.g. Go Toby Go! or maybe some song lyrics.

Permalink Reply by Ben Richards on February 3, 2012 at 15:18 I use Endomondo . .
Its very good and im competing with my mate this year to see which one of us can do the most miles over the year. By looking at the website im 50 miles behind him at the moment :(
Permalink Reply by Rich22222 on February 3, 2012 at 15:49 Is there a prize? try switching it on on the train etc :)
Permalink Reply by Stuart Thompson on February 3, 2012 at 16:21 I used to use Sports Tracker when I had a Nokia and it was pretty good, sadly it wasn't available on Android when I got my current phone so I use Endomondo at the moment
I use Ride With GPS with my Gamin Edge 705
I think it gives a pretty good report with decent mapping etc.
It even shows the National Cycle Network Routes if you choose the OSM cycle map in the mapping options in the top right dropdown menu. I know it works as it has followed routes where there are tracks shown and not roads.it is worth check what route it takes around traffic islands if using it to plan a route to ride. You can pick a start point and ask it to follow roads to the end point you select thus plotting a route on its own.
It would be interesting to hear if anyone else uses this website.
