Cycling in and around Birmingham England
I bought this off Simon a few months ago to fit onto my Pompino. 3 speeds turned out to be too few for my knees, so I fitted a SRAM S7 hub instead. That means I have the wheel sitting around.
Here's what Simon had to say:
New touring rim and spokes, built by a proffessional. 3sp SA hub, reconditioned by someone who knows his onions regarding Sturmeys.
Make great wheel for an urban commuter - very low maintenance unlike derailer gears, and chain lasts much longer.
I can probably sort out an 18, 22 or 24t sprocket for it.
£40 collected from Warwick. I'll deliver to central Brum stations for another £5.

I'm quite interested in this. What are the rim details?

It's a Mavic A319 + as I'm sure Simon's statement that it was new is true, it's done less than 100 miles.
As it happens, I'm in Brum tomorrow should you still be interested.

A319 is good - I built my play CX wheels with those a couple of yrs ago.
I'll pm you my email address and we can arrange a pickup.
Thanks
Andy

Now I just need to source an SA 3sp shifter and cable then I'll be ready to convert my Peugeot fixie into a 3sp commuter :-)
Permalink Reply by Andy H on January 10, 2012 at 15:34 Glad to hear you got there, Andy. Hope it gives you good service.
As for the shifter, I got one of the modern SA thumb-grip ones (since sold) when I made my Pompino up. I thoroughly recommend it, as the change is much more positive than the old-fashioned (& flimsy) trigger shifter. I think I got mine from Practical Cycles for about £15. If you're looking to go secondhand, there are loads on eBay. There is also a bar end option these days. In fact, you might be able to convert the modern thumb shifter to bar end.
Hope that helps,
Andy
Permalink Reply by CKS on January 10, 2012 at 19:21 I think SA gear cables are identical to conventional ones, the nipple might possibly be a bit thinner though. You could try a conventional cable if you haven't got an SA one at hand.
You'll also need a fulcrum clip to attach the other end of the cable to the frame. You can get them off ebay as well, or perhaps just use a really tight zip-tie.
Permalink Reply by Andy White on May 21, 2012 at 14:33 Conversion completed! I now have a 3-speed roadster. One day I might get it painted up, but for now it's a super commuter/winter gears bike.
I actually used a conventional downtube shifter to work the SA 3speed hub and it works a dream. There is a 'slippy point' that I found when testing it in the garage but in practice its not in a place where I naturally flick the lever to, so I've had no duff changes so far - excellent, and the gear spread is 43/63/84 - perfect!

Permalink Reply by CKS on May 21, 2012 at 14:55 There is supposed to be a 'neutral' between second and third gears. If it's there it's not a problem.

Absolutely. I've no idea why I typed 43 as my geartable says 47. (43 would be with a 20t sprocket however).
