Cycling in and around Birmingham England

Work on the A38 cycle route is due to begin next week. Tory councillors moaning about it has already started...

I think it should be cancelled and more car lanes built to solve the congestion problem.

Not sure Tory councillors moaning after last week counts :-)

Seriously this is an area where people will cycle (UOB, Hospitals etc) and an area where traffic is already slow at Rush hour, I see no issues where it will make things worse.

On the A34 this is not really an issue as a totally different type of road.

The side roads around the area are gridlocked anyway.
Do these councillors commute into town on a daily basis or are they just full of crap ?

they even admit it is bad and yet a scheme to try and help is dissed. But they and their supporters are swimming against the tide.

They're also moaning about the Woodgate Valley Green route proposals

ah this one - http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/cycle-path-will-...

oh look it is John Lines commenting, what a surprise, a dinosaur.

I'd imagine any path through Woodgate Valley would replace the existing worn out and rutted gravel path so not sure how it would ruin the park.

If they put a decent surface on it then cyclists and disabled people might use it, and OMG a bike!

spewing out all those fumes

I'm guessing it'll be spray and chip rather than tarmac, thus it'll look just like the current track but fewer ruts....less exciting for off road motorbikes.

As far as signs go I'd think they'd put in one at each end and one at the turn off up to the vis centre...hardly destroying the park.

Although, to be honest, when I last used it last year it was fine on my hybrid with road tyres, so if the councillor wants to build us an alternative road side path round the out side of the park then we'll have two routes to use.

I'm not familiar with the area so don't know know if it makes sense or not but at one of the ward meetings Councillor Lines was proposing an alternative route outside Woodgate Valley wildlife park.

The road that runs round the south side of the park is not overly nice to ride in rush hour......just wide enough that many drivers want to overtake but not wide enough for tyem to do so without getting uncomfortably close.....if you are an experienced rider its ok but the average rider wont like it.  Thus a quality road side cycleway wouldnt go amiss.  But it'd cost a lot more than redoing the park path as it has to get around some major junctions.   I'm guessing yhough that Lines is just thinking of a bit of paint on the pavement.

The road to the north is quieter but goes all round the houses and up and down the hills

Room on the road, Clapgate Lane and Stonehouse Lane, for cyclepaths either side, separated from traffic. But this is Birmingham.........
