Have you thought about converting it to singlespeed?  Just shorten the alrerady broken chain.  Pop it onto a middle sprocket with the chain lined up to the Middle (or inner on a double) chainring.   No need for derailleurs nor the hanger. Lighter and less maintenance.

 

Unless.... its got vertical dropouts.  In which case you may be able to bend the derailleur and screw it down  so that its just acting as a chain tensioner.  If the deraileur is totally shot then you could probably get a scrap one from the spares bin at a bike shop for £1.

Hadn't considered the poor man's single-speed as an option. Would need a new chain as this one hasn't been maintained. Will think about that.

Aston's have a number of bikes coming up in their next auction if you are interested.  They've all got estimated prices of £20-40.  The auction is on Wednesday 25 January (starting at 6pm) in Dudley.

Several lots of 10 various bikes for £20 - £40 - you could afford to lose a bike (shaped object) every other month!
