Had an accident?

Information from Levenes Cycle Injury (site sponsors)

If you're involved in an accident on the road, you may need your cycle repairing or replacing. You may have medical expenses and loss of earnings. You may also feel that justice should be done by holding the responsible party to account. Whatever your motive, you should bear in mind a number of points if you are ever involved in an accident -

  • If still in danger, move to a safe position.
  • Call the police and an ambulance if you are injured, in shock, or the other party is not cooperating.
  • Get the driver’s vehicle registration at a minimum. If possible, get the driver’s name, address and insurance details.
  • Do not discuss who was at fault with or accept money from the other person.
  • Take photographs of the vehicles, their position in the road and any damage to your bike and the other vehicles involved.
  • If the police attend, note down the officer’s name and ask for a reference number
  • Get the contact details of as many witnesses as possible. If liability is disputed the court may well give the most weight to statements of witnesses who are independent
  • Look for CCTV cameras both public and private. Ensure the police move quickly to preserve the footage.
  • If needed, ask for help from bystanders with any of the above.
  • Regardless of the severity of your injuries, go to hospital or your GP as soon as possible.
  • Take plenty of pictures of your injuries.

Don’t worry if the driver didn’t stop, you may still be able to get compensation through the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB). But make sure you report the incident to the police.

If the accident was caused by a defect in the road, take photographs of it at the scene in case it is repaired. Go back to the scene and re-take the photos and get proper measurements of the defect ASAP.

We have been seeking justice and helping cyclists claim for injuries for over 20 years. In the event that you do have an accident on the road, Levenes Cycle Injury can help.
