Cycling in and around Birmingham England
Comment by Toby on November 18, 2011 at 11:53 It's lovely. From the photo, it looks as if the pedals have been replaced recently, so it is being maintained to a degree.
Comment by CKS on November 18, 2011 at 12:17 >> The front brake cable is snapped, I will carry a spare and replace it if I see it again.
That's a nice idea but not necessarily a good one. If the owner returns they may accuse you of preparing to steal it.
This bike hasn't got a crossbar so there's a good chance it will be owned by a woman. Some women find any form of attention from men intimidating.
Comment by Toby on November 18, 2011 at 12:33 Imagine, she sees a group of men huddled around her bike from a few yards away. She runs off to get the policeman she has just passed by, moments before. When they return to the bike, she is relieved to find it intact, with a new front brake cable, drivetrain and gears de-greased and lubricated and chrome cleaner applied to the now gleaming wheel rims, and the mechanical vigilantes nowhere to be seen.
It would be like the 2011 Hollywood reboot of this;

Some women might also find it patronising.
Comment by Sarah-Jane on November 18, 2011 at 16:26 Sorry LS - not having a go at you - that's a kind thought. It was the the notion that "some women find any form of attention from men intimidating" I was cross about and replied hastily.
Comment by Toby on November 18, 2011 at 16:38 ... if it was a bloke on a girl's bike, he may be equally intimidated or patronised.
It might belong to an ungrateful person of either gender who leaves the well meaning mechanic with such a show of ambivalence, it renders them incapable of carrying out any altruistic act ever, ever again.
The possibilities are limitless... it might belong to a thoroughly nasty piece of work who's only redeeming character trait is their love of this bike.
I'm curious now. The owner of this bike needs to be identified and congratulated for keeping this old classic in a state of reasonable repair, whether they are male or female. Maybe tape a note on the bike stand - with a brake cable enclosed in the envelope too!
Draft of note;
Dear BSA Star Rider rider,
Please join www.birminghamcyclist.com. We want to know what this marvelous bike you have locked up here says about you as a person, if any connection between a person's personality and an inanimate object can be made at all!

Comment by Sarah-Jane on November 18, 2011 at 16:48 Thanks Toby - that's a much better response than mine.
Comment by Sarah-Jane on November 18, 2011 at 16:49 It's nearly wine o'clock and I've had a shit week.
Comment by Toby on November 18, 2011 at 17:05 thought this week might turn out like that myself, the way it started!

Unfortunately there are some - they usually descibe themselves as 'radical feminists'.
