Cycling in and around Birmingham England
Comment by Toby on January 10, 2012 at 15:43 i can recommend the wild boar burger in there!
a couple of my routes criss cross by there. i've made a mental note of your bike (v.nice by the way), so i will make my fellow cyclist greeting extra cheery if i see you out and about and may even make the universally recognised gesture for "fancy a pint?" if i am nearer the end of my ride than the beginning!
Comment by Andy White on January 10, 2012 at 17:30 £15 from a student clearing out his flat and £5 for a brand new copper railed green Brooks from the bargain bin at the local bike shop - who needs to spend hundreds on a tasty new shiny thing of beauty? I'd love to! :-)
Took off all the rusty gear stuff, fixed it up and it rides really well. As the photo shows, during the ride the muguard came loose at the bottom bracket but I hadnt put a cable tie in my tool roll - doh!
Comment by Toby on January 10, 2012 at 17:37 Every time I have been past there on my bike, I have gone down Lea End Lane or Brock Hill Lane. On Sunday I made the mistake of going down Icknield Street towards Weatheroak Hill. I say mistake - it was actually quite fun but probably better suited to a mountain bike or cross bike. The road surface is chewed up and there is masses of tractor muck.
Imagine it could be quite a lot worse if this winter we're having was a tad more, well, wintery!
Comment by James Russell on January 11, 2012 at 9:52 Try coming up the same hill on a road bike! Wheel slip ruins your rhythm.
Comment by CKS on January 11, 2012 at 10:21 Is this the same bike your putting the Sturmey Archer hub in? You'll end up with something like a Pashley Clubman Urban.
Comment by Andy White on January 11, 2012 at 18:53 That's the general idea, but I can't decide whether to get the frame powdercoated black before I put the 3sp wheel in. The frame is nothing special, its not 531 or anything, but it is true and reasonably stiff.
As for Ickneild St. I really enjoy that road - it's one of my favourites. It's the most direct road going south out of Brum and it's so full of history and character. I feel like it makes a very special start/end to a days cycling. However, I do agree that its not the best if you're riding 23's on your best sportive bike.
And to avoid wheelslip - stay in the saddle and grind that gear around. :-)
