Quite impressed with this.  I hope they aren't going to ruin it by covering it in gravel like they have elsewhere...

... Yes, they are.

FFS.  I suggest everyone takes the opportunity to go and appreciate it before that happens.  It really is lovely and smooth.

In fairness they did the same with the Harborne Walkway. Tarmac and then covered over and the surface is decent

The chippings that make the path unusable on a bike until the path is swept, fall off over a period of a very few years.   Those on the Worcester and Birmingham canal have fallen off to the point where the tar is exposed.   That wears quickly, allowing water to get into the base layer.   This freezes in winter and breaks up the path.

Yeahbut magic gravel means the path doesn't need to be swept or gritted, apparently.

Comment by Robert on May 21, 2018 at 7:49

So I've been told, but do they sweep or grit the lengthy asphalt sections of the Rea Valley path?

Comment by LS on June 6, 2018 at 20:27
I've just cycled from Quinton. It's been gritted now so I didn't bother exploring in the other direction.
Comment by Shakey on June 7, 2018 at 5:41
Gritted is an understatement. Even after the recent torrential rain, it has a substantial covering of loose grit which whilst probably not too bad on a MTB, is not much fun on a 23c roadie.
