For the last few weeks there has been a Carrera MTB left unlocked behind the bins on our school site in Ladywood.  It's basically a good bike.  Probably 2008 model needing a little (but not…Continue

This just in   :-(    Dear Mr White Thank you for your email below regarding the sentence given to Gavin Hill. As you may know, the Attorney General has the power, under section 36 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, to refer to…

It's not the maximun for GBH.  He was rightly charged with a motoring offence AND an assault.

However, he was also charged with and found guilty of GBH which I am sure potentially carries a much longer sentence.  If you have an argument with someone and then punch them causing serious injury I expect you may go to…

I have just remembered a trick from the past. A pity i didnt remember it when I was stuck on the canal - probably stress! If attempts to fix the puncture fail, stuff the tyre with grass - you do need a lot of grass.  I have seen it…

When removing the punctured tube its always a good policy to remember its orientation with the wheel.  Inflate it immediately, find the hole then put it against the tyre (in the same orientation it was removed) and you should have no trouble…

Nobody knows what works because we all have different agendas.  Perhaps there is no one answer. Personally i'm for the crowd-sourcing approach because  it is constantly being updated, different ideas/needs get represented and you end…

Dont forget to check the spoke heads.  Its not impossible that one of these has come through the rim tape. They tend not to puncture straight away but inevitably do at intervals from just a few minutes to a few hours.

Andy White replied to Craig Dickson's discussion 'canals'
Never been asked to show a towpath licence in over 30yrs of using them - day and night.  Never knowingly seen a British Waterways person either come to that. If you're using a stretch of canal at night that you are familiar with by day…

I always carry a spare tube with me (sometimes 2).  Even if you dont know how to patch a tube it only takes a couple of minutes to swap a tube and reinflate the tyre,  Be sure to run your fingers around the inside of the tyre though…

I think Tim is getting to the nub of a problem on our roads.  More signage, more advetising, more in-car gizmos to fiddle with.  It seems that there is ever more 'stuff' to distract the motorist and thus allow a ton and a…

Actually I'm sure Mark wasn't implying anything.  Most people aren't when they use sloppy language in a way which was perfectly acceptable in the unreconstructed recent past. . But we don't live in the past.  And it…

About me
Used to 'live' on the bike before the kids. Rode with the (now defunct) West Brom CTC through most of the 80's and did lots of Audaxes but never managed PBP. Had more comebacks than I care to remember - each one more unsucessful than the last. Ride the occasional Audax to keep my 'hand in' and go out with the North Birmingham CTC about 2-3x per year. Mostly though I just ride by myself. Am going to make an effort to get out more but lack the incentive of having someone to ride with :-(
