I get 3rd party liability cover as a member of the CTC. But most of the time, the damage has been caused to the cyclist rather than the cyclist causing damage to other things. The issue for the cyclist in the BBC story was that the van he was hit…

Linking to the Five Ways' underpasses would have been wonderful - not much understanding of cyclists needs in the highways section of BCC though. The consultation went on in 2010 and early 2011. Hopefully we'll catch more of these in the…

Thanks Rich. The new bus stop on Harborne Road is just at the start of the development site, then the bus lane will end quite abruptly, so there is quite a distance of bus lane lost. Nice long entry slip lanes for the multi-story car park, because…

James - there is a rant thread for discussing riding with motor vehicles vs segregation from motor vehicles. Take your comments there. Ryan - It is difficult to find out what plans there are for changes to roads. The process of…

Personally, I like Comic Sans - I use it all the time at work, as it is easier for students to read, and they won't end up copying the funny 'a' shape of most fonts. Schawlbe Marathon Plus may not technically be puncture proof - but…

Chris replied to Ian-C's discussion 'Have A Laugh At The Newbie'
Don't be embarrassed. I've done this many times. I have Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres on my wheels now and don't worry about punctures. They do make cycling a bit harder than thinner tyres, but you'd soon get used to that.

A good hill near the start of the commute is important in winter, to warm up your head so that your brain doesn't cut-out from too much wind chill. Cycling somewhere flat, with strong headwinds in winter, would be worse than Birmingham.

So, James, are you saying that we should just give up?

Chris replied to LS's discussion 'London to go Dutch?'
The LCC campaign is organised around a very specific call for safe (in the objective and subjective sense) space for cyclists on major roads in London - with clear and actionable plans. I think that this sort of campaign will be useful because it…

Chris replied to Lucas's discussion 'The World's Most Cycle-friendly Building'
Japan is not any more of a 'throw-away' society than the UK is - that image of Japan is a creation of Europeans and Americans who like to image the East as 'exotic' and different. This attitude towards bikes is the result of a…

Chris replied to Lucas's discussion 'The World's Most Cycle-friendly Building'
James - I agree that no bike theft is acceptable, but in a situation where the bike is cheap, and seen as a mode of transport rather than a treasured belonging, a certain level of theft may be written off in people's minds as part of the cost…

Chris replied to Lucas's discussion 'The World's Most Cycle-friendly Building'
Where bikes are more common, thefts of bikes are also more common. I think those people have locked their bikes through the wheels, to stop people riding them off, but they won't have locked them to the stands, to stop people carrying them…

Sure would like any help Push Bikes can offer. First I want to survey the route taking lots of photos and some video. Then I want to draw up a list of people to contact especially MPs and local councillors. I think we need to know how much a bike lane each way on the A453 would cost between Sutton Coldfield and Birchfield and the A34 bus lane into Birmingham city centre. would be useful to hae some people on bikes for the pics and video for illustration purposes.
