"Thanks for the help, folks, I might approach 5 Ways from Broad Street and see what the flow of traffic is like there before making my choice. Also, I like the idea of going  Wheeleys Road as well - might give it a go. Cheers again :) "

"The canal at 8pm is just fine.   I regularly use the canals after dark (and often after the witching hour), and the only caveat is that you need good lighting and puncture resistant tyres (because repairing a p*ncture on an unlit path…"

"I would take Wheeleys Road across the middleway and then right onto St James Road to Calthorpe Road then Westbourne Road or stay on Wheeleys Road / Arthur Road / Edgbaston Park Road past the Uni campus at the Vale then up Somerset Road."

"There is a cycle lane going under five ways that puts you back onto the Hagley Road, I see lots of bikes (for Birmingham) on there and it's easy enough to ride on as the traffic is usually high enough to be quite slow. Google maps suggests…"

Getting to Harborne from New Street

Hi folks, I am an expat (living in London) and I am trying to get from New Street over to Harborne (just off the High Street). I am pretty comfortable on the roads but I am rather no wanting to go over at 5 Ways if I can avoid it (I think I would take Calthorpe Street....). I'd rather not do the canal at 8pm either. Is 5 Ways  that bad or am I being overly cautious? If it is worth avoiding, is there any other route? See More
