Simon replied to Ian's discussion Commuter Route
"I would suggest that that title is somewhat misleading - the routes were meant to be calmed and controlled enough for people to be able to use without first doing a L3.  They failed in creating routes like this.  This is not the fault of…"

Simon replied to Ian's discussion Commuter Route
"Forum seems to have gone strange......the text from my previous post has dispersed, yet it's visible in the bit at the side...scratches head. Anyway, what I think I said was: It's not my contention that VC gets more people onto bikes,…"
Tuesday
Simon replied to Ian's discussion Commuter Route
"But, in my book, VC isn't meant to create loads of new cyclists.  It's the best way to stay safe when there are no alternative credible facilities, or a method of riding if you want to get somewhere fast and enjoy a bit of…"

Chris Lowe replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"The A34 route reaches Heathfield Road because the BCR team needed to get plans out to consultation and approved and built before April 2018.They will be developing plans for the section from Heathfield Road to Perry Barr in the near future and…"

Simon replied to Ian's discussion Commuter Route
"I dont think that we should condemn a type of cycling based on one or two bad experiences otherwise im sure we could find a few horrendous incidents that have happened on segregated cycleways and condemn them.  Rather its a case that vehicular…"

Simon replied to Ian's discussion Commuter Route
"This discussion reminds me of something once said to me by an experienced cycle instructor.  Riding round Fiveways is indeed do-able if you are up to what bikeability calls 'level 3' riding ability.  This instructor (who is an…"

Your Average Joe replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"I agree with most of what Kim has said. Unlike cycling on normal roads, where you're constantly being passed by other motor vehicles, it is possible to cycle in a bus lane and not encounter a bus, either at all, or only occasionally. Having…"

ARKrider replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"As good as the bus lanes are on the A34 compared to cities like said London and even Leicester cycling on that road is suicidal. One of the biggest issues I have with the A34 bus lanes are the bus gates. The traffic light never change green for…"

Kim replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"Bus lanes work well for a certain type of cyclist.  The sort of cyclist who wants to make progress and isn't afraid of cycling in traffic, but appreciates a lane with minimal cars getting in the way.  I'm usually one of those…"

Robert replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"No, bus lanes are not the answer, they are just better than nothing at all.   Firstly a bus needs to pull in and stop at every bus stop (on a busy route).   The corollary of that is that a bus needs to have good acceleration and…"

ian robathan replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"you mention the Bus Lanes Robert and that is exactly why I feel dead safe on the A34 say compared to Hagley Road which I do a lot. The lane is wide enough for a bus to pass and in fact being three lanes in part for cars makes it pretty darn safe.…"

Robert replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"I have to negotiate the Triangle at least once a week.   Even in a car it is risky, because it is fundamentally badly designed, and motorists have enough to do avoiding crashing into each other, let alone looking for an unexpected…"

ARKrider replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"Also I am very supportive of both routes, I just feel that Perry Bar would make better use if it connected to a current section of cycle infrastructure. Selly Oak technically connect to other routes, but Perry Bar has NO routes to connect to, which…"
Mar 16
ARKrider replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"Ok yes the Selly Oak triangle has no proper cycling connection which is a fault in design, HOWEVER, the gap is very short being only 0.3 miles from the shared pathway on the Selly Oak A38 bypass, and even then there is no sign to declare "…"
Mar 16
Robert replied to Simon's discussion A34 lights
"No, it doesn't.   Your statement is just plain incorrect.   There is no cycle infrastructure connection with the Selly Oak Triangle junction, which is the equivalent of the roundabout at Perry Barr.   Heading…"

My bike

My Fred Williams Lightweight Special fixie.

To save further confusion - this bike is "Fixed": that means that when you stop pedalling the back wheel locks up, it has no freewheel.
