Cycling in and around Birmingham England
This morning I decided it was time to put more effort in to my mornings cycling over the last 10 months I have increased my cycling from 3km to about 18km, my fitness has improved I have lost a little weight and am enjoying my cycling. So in February i brought a new bike with much better parts which makes my cycling experience more enjoyable anyway I do digress back to this mornings ride.
I joined the Stratford canal at the chop locks proceeded to Kings Norton Junction headed off down the Birmingham & Worcester canal towards Birmingham. When I got to just beyond university railway station,I carried my bike up a flight of stairs on to Somerset Road and headed off towards Harborne, Its a slight incline to start with it by the time I reached Metchley lane I must admit my lack of fitness was showing (puffing like an old steam train). But I pushed on over the lights down the hill and first left in to north road and on in to Park Hill road I hooked up then in to the Harborne walk & Cycle track.following the track down to Springfield Park through the park and out the far side cutting through the back of a bit of a housing estate only a few hundred yards. At the far end there are a set of gates and a flight of steps with a metal ramp thing to push the bike down on to the canal tow path (Not Sure the canal name) I followed the canal back in to Brum round past the sea life centre then on into gas street and then all the way back up the Birmingham & Worcester canal to Kings Norton Junction and then back home. all in all a gentle ride of approx 13.3 miles I think, i'm still learning to de-cypher my computer took about 2.5 hours. A cracking ride on a dry February morning I bet it will be even better on a sunny warm summers day.............

Comment by Ian-C on March 6, 2012 at 11:44 Absolutely superb sunny morning on the Rea Valley Route to and from Cannon Hill, coffee and a sandwich in the cafe watch the world pass by. Then a quick lap round the park before returning home only 8 miles all in all but hey its further than the sofa would have travelled lol . Oh and at least 24 cheery good mornings given out and 24 returned albeit from a few stunned dog walkers who probably don't get a good morning usually.
Comment by Ian-C on March 10, 2012 at 8:56 This mornings ride Friday March 9th met a mate on Kings Norton Junction tripped off down the Birmingham canal in to Birmingham. Round Gas Street down some other canal came off on summer row, just by Paradise circus cut back up the ICC and rep crossed broad street Down to navigation street down hill street in to hurst street. We picked up the cycle route headed out of the city picking up the Rea Valley route headed up in to cannon hill park stopped at the cafe for coffee and a sandwich then cycled through the park up the Rea Valley route back up to Kings Norton Junction very pleasant mornings cycling.
After 12 months of cycling now I'm feeling fitter
cycling further I remember when I was out of breath cycling a 2 miles
now I can do 18-20 miles As long as the hills are short and not to steep lol
I'm working on hills but enjoying my cycling more and more
Comment by Ian-C on March 10, 2012 at 9:00 Sure John I'm not sure when it will be due to a few work commitments but next time ill let you know and your more than welcome. To join us at Kings Norton junction or along the route somewhere, Because I work nights its usually a Friday around a 1015 start
Comment by Ian-C on March 13, 2012 at 15:54 I got talked in to doing Cannock chase yesterday by a friend although he normally does the Monkey and dog trails we decided to do what's called the blue route which is a leisurely cycle over Cannock chase. He lied it was up hill down dale the ups were physical the downs were exhilarating (and yes i did have to push the bike up a few parts of the hills) puffing like an old chuffer train and I did fall off once while turning round, my feet got caught in the toe clips and over I went my mate laughed so much I thought he was going to have a heart attack. Plus when we got back to the cafe for breakfast everyone sees you covered in mud nods smiles and says ya fell off huh.
Comment by Ian-C on April 1, 2012 at 17:20 30 Days of biking started with a swift 5km around Brandwood and Lifford canals and reservoir not a massive trip but enough to say i have been out
