Looks like there will be even more lawless speeding motorists in West Midlands

from BBC West Midlands speed cameras facing switch-off

Hundreds of speed cameras could be switched off in the West Midlands after funding of £1.9m for the partnership which runs them was cut.

The West Midlands Casualty Reduction Scheme, which manages the cameras, was funded by seven local authorities in the West Midlands.

But the authorities have withdrawn the funding because of budget cuts.

If no alternative funds can be found cameras across the region will be switched off on 1 April.

The local authority areas effected by the cuts are Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton .

Insp Mick Hartill, from the West Midlands Casualty Reduction Scheme, said: "Potentially 304 cameras could be switched off because the funding has been withdrawn from next year.

"Unless we can find the funding they will be turned off.

"The scheme was set up to have an impact on casualties which it has but I believe these cuts will have an impact too."

How much does each serious road crash cost? Emergency services, NHS, court proceedings, prison sentences (ok rarely if a cyclist is killed), compensation etc. Probably more than £1.8 million in some cases.

Mobile speed traps are the answer so people don't just slow down for 100 yards.
