Cycling in and around Birmingham England
Hi all, I'm new to Birmingham Cyclist although I'm not new to cycling in Birmingham.
I've had a cheap road bike which has served me well so far, I bought some new wheels and gears after about 600 miles as the others were a little worn. Since then it's given me another 1100 miles and seems to be going strong. I'm upgrading because I want something faster, lighter and more agile.
I've gone for a Trek 2.5 compact, I test rode it and it was more than what I was expecting. It has Ultegra everywhere with the exception of the rear cassette, which is 105. Would it be worth paying the extra for the Ultegra cassette or would I be better off waiting until the 105 needs changing and doing it then? All other componenets (wheels etc..) are Trek's own Bontrager.
This isn't going to replace my current bike and I'll mainly be using it for evening / weekend rides with cycling clubs and the like.
Any comments or opinions are welcomed.
Thanks
Comment by NBC on August 25, 2011 at 11:14 Hello Lucas,
I would stick with the 105 cassette and then replace it when it's worn. The only real difference is a few grams weight, and you never know, you might find you like the old workhorse 105.
Cheers,
N.
Comment by Lucas on August 25, 2011 at 19:14 I think that you're right. I've kept the 105 cassette, apparently the Ultegra is weighs less but will wear a little quicker due to the materials used. It's meant to be a little quicker when changing gear but at my level I would have been happy with a complete 105 groupset. I only went for Ultegra as it was in a sale at the same price as 105. Thanks for your help though.
I've not had chance to ride it yet, hopefully get out on it soon if the weather's good.
